Somerset is a fascinating and largely unspoilt county, its countryside
and coast changing dramatically from one part of the county to the other.
There is something here for everyone.
The attractive coastal resorts of Minehead and Burnham-on-Sea have
long sandy beaches whilst the Exmoor coastline is one of dramatic rocks.
Somerset has five ranges of hills: the Blackdowns, Mendips, Quantocks,
Poldens and the Brendons - all have their own special character. The
Levels and Moors are the flatlands of Somerset and ideal for the cyclist,
nature lovers and walkers. It is a beautiful area and one of the most
important wetlands in the world. Most of the area is no more than 25
feet above sea level and is made up of small fields and ditches where
you can find a vast array of wildlife.
No visit to Somerset is complete
without a trip to Chedder; home to fine cheese, the cathedral like
caves of Chedder Gorge are a fascinating experience.
Somerset's County
Town, Taunton, is ideal for shopping and as a touring base. Nestling
in the Mendip Hills is Wells, England's smallest city with its beautiful
cathedral. The west front is of particular interest with over 400
carved figures.
Further south, around Yeovil, you will be delighted by the tranquil beauty
of the stately houses and gardens.
South Somerset is predominantly an
agricultural
area with a diverse countryside of unspoilt and well-wooded scenery.
The towns are interesting; the villages and hamlets, built mostly
of local stone, are attractive; the many manor houses date from Tudor
and
Georgian times; many of the churches are of architectural merit
and have the handsome towers for which Somerset is famous. |
