Northumbria is full of fascination, its wild and glorious countryside
carries a mystery all of its own. There is a lot to see, whether your
interests are historical, nautical or environmental. So give yourself
plenty of time to explore the Northumbria National Park, the Cheviots
and of course the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Northumbria is home
to some beautiful wildlife, but for puffins and seals there is no better
place than the Farne Isles.
Northumbria is a county with a long and turbulent history. Hadrian's
Wall and of Northumbria's fortified houses and castles are well
worth visiting. Bamburgh Castle, perched on a craggy outcrop of rock
overlooking
the sea is unmissable.
Even if you hate shopping you should not miss the market town of Berwick,
which boasts the only complete circle of Elizabethan town walls in
England. Alnwick is a charming Northumberland town of sandstone buildings
dominated by the castle, dating back to the 12th century; the location
for Hogworts in the Harry Potter films. Along the Northumbria Heritage
coast, much of which is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,
there are the small towns of Seahouses, from where you take the boat
to the Farnes and Craster, still famous for kippers and the starting
point for a walk to the haunting ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle.
