Hampshire is a great county for a self catering holiday, with a fascinating
diversity of attractions, including its many seaside resorts, its long
maritime history is celebrated in Portsmouth, and the Victory has pride
of place on the quayside.
The Solent is popular for sailing and the nearby Beaulieu river is
a delightful refuge, here also is Beaulieu motor museum. Hampshire
has a long maritime history and two of England's largest ports lie
on its coast. The county is famed as home of the writers Jane Austen
and
Charles Dickens.
The New Forest National Park is a remarkable wild and tranquil area.
Just two hours from London this area of Hampshire has retained a unique
landscape of ancient and ornamental woodland, pine plantations, heath,
broad lawns, mires, saltmarshes and picturesque villages. Set aside
as a forest for hunting more than 900 years ago by William the Conqueror
it is still grazed by deer, ponies and cattle. A wonderful place for
walking, cycling and riding.
The South Downs, stradles Hampshire and Sussex. Another wonderful area
for walking, it too has lost little of its tranquil past and remains
a wonderful area in which to unwind.
Four miles West of Alton, Medstead
is some 700 feet above sea level. It has a very attractive little
church with a small wooden bell turret capping a shingle roof and fine
Norman
arches.
