The picturesque village of Kettleburgh lies between Earl Soham and Framlingham and was once on the borders of the land ruled by the Iceni tribe under Queen Boudicca, later occupied by the Vikings. Once a large settlement Kettleburgh was granted a market and fair in the 1200s. Today it is a sleepy and peaceful village where you can enjoy a relaxing drink at the Chequers pub with its beautiful riverside garden. The Thatched Cottage is situated on the crest of a hill near the ancient church of St Andrews and is tucked quietly away at the end of a private road. It benefits from stunning views over the Deben Valley and glorious sunsets! Surrounding footpaths lead across tranquil fields to the village pub, the Deben and beyond.
The Thatched Cottage is two and a half miles from the historic market town of Framlingham famed for its medieval castle and its links to Lady Jane Grey and Queen Elizabeth I. The castle overlooks the Mere and Framlingham College with its Gothic architecture (its notable junior school Brandeston Hall is located in Brandeston only a mile away from the Thatched Cottage). The historic Church of St Michael’s which lies near the Castle is also well worth a visit. Within the town centre are many charming shops selling local and organic products. A traditional market takes place in the Square every Tuesday and Saturday. There are inviting restaurants and tea shops and the Station pub is a hidden gem which serves really great food!
The village of Earl Soham is just a couple of miles from the Thatched Cottage and should not be missed. Delightful period cottages are located around the Village Greens and along what was once a Roman Road. The village pub, the Victoria, has a well deserved reputation for the quality and variety of its real ales which are produced in its brewery also located in the village and its excellent home cooked food.
The Thatched Cottage is close to the Heritage Coast and within half a hour you can reach , Aldeburgh, Snape Maltings and Southwold. The proms at Snape and the literary festival at Aldeburgh are both extremely popular. Other places within easy reach and certainly not to be missed include Walberswick, Woodbridge, Dunwich, Orford and RSPB at Minsmere. There will be loads to do throughout your stay and with quiet country lanes all around you bicycles might be fun.
