WOODBRIDGE 7.5miles (12km) ALDEBURGH 11 miles ORFORD 9miles (15km)SNAPE 6miles (10km) FRAMLINGHAM 5miles (8km) A small brick-constructed, beamed cottage dating back to the 17th or 18th century, close to the Grade 1 listed church, the ford and in the centre of this delightful little hamlet which rightly has conservation status.
Hollyhock Cottage has a sweet little walled cottage garden to the front and a good sized detached rear garden, where there is a comfortable summer house making outside dining pleasant what ever the weather.
Provided: The cupboards contain a variety of teas and coffee, there's milk in the fridge and fresh bread. There are toiletries in the bathroom and kindling for the fire.
In house entertainment: A flat screened TV in the sitting room, Ipod doc and radio with CD player and a TV/DVD in the bedroom with a small selection of DVDs, books and family games in the sitting room.
Children are welcome and there is a cot in the second bedroom. Hollyhock Cottage makes such a wonderful romantic get away for two it is tempting to come without youngsters.
Packing tips: Beachwear - close to Aldeburgh - and Wellington boots or 'hunters',Marlesford is like stepping back in time - with the 'big house' on the hill overlooking this tiny, peaceful village - even the rooks seem to 'doff' their caps. Warm outdoor wear in winter, the cottage itself is really warm, whatever the weather with its log burning stove and adjustable radiators in every room. There are some really fantastic county walks around Marlesford, binoculars - this is birding country and bikes - the lanes are quiet and there are some excellent cycle routes towards the coast and inland to Framlingham, Wickham Market and Woodbridge.
Best beaches: Aldeburgh and Thorpeness - pebbles and sand at low tide with lots to do in or out of the water and at any time of year. Travel a little further north and the beaches become sandy - Southwold.
Activites: Walks - Shortest Marlesford to the Farm Cafe - in all honesty you will not walk off the lovely traditional English breakfast at the Farm Cafe but you will enjoy it so much you won't complain. Closer to the coast there are some lovely walks along the estuaries at Snape, Aldeburgh and Orford.
There is a riding stables near by - Valley Farm - and hacking in this area is a joy.
Some wonderful boat trips from Orford to Orford Ness (National Trust),and Havergate Island (RSPB) as well as along the estuary; the Lady Florence offers breakfast and lunch cruises.
Restaurants: Excellent options at Framlingham, Woodbridge, Orford and Aldeburgh
Entertainment: Marlesford is just a short drive from the Snape Maltings Concert Hall where there is now a year round programme of concerts, opera, ballet and jazz. The Seckford Theatre in Woodbridge has excellent plays and concerts and there are good cinemas in Woodbridge and Aldeburgh.
